The host of Grand Designs Australia has declared he “hates” The Block, calling for the Channel 9 building competition to be “banned from television”.
Architect and TV personality Peter Maddison ripped into the popular show in a candid interview for The Binge Guide, calling it “absolute bloody nonsense”, The Herald Sun reported.
“It should be banned from television because it leaves people with the false aspirations that they can become – in inverted commas – a project manager or a builder or a designer,” he explained.
“It’s a joke. It’s a very bad example of the reality of building, the responsibilities around that and the difficulty of it all. They make it look very easy.”
Comparing the reality show to Grand Designs, which is filmed over several months and is available to stream on Binge, he said: “I have welded myself to a show that has integrity, where we show the real trials and tribulations [of building].”

Maddison’s comments come after a particularly tumultuous year for The Block, which attempted its biggest challenge yet in 2022, heading to Gisborne, Victoria, for a “tree change” format.
The much anticipated auction day proved to be a disaster across the board, with favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane making a profit of just $20,000, as winners Omar and Oz took home a record profit of $1.6 million.
Eccentric multi-millionaire and serial Block buyer Danny Wallis bought all three homes that sold on auction day, with the two houses he didn’t buy, built by Dylan and Jenny and Sharon and Ankur, being passed in.
In a shock twist, Sharon and Ankur’s house was later bought by surprise bidder Adrian Portelli, who had attempted to buy Omar and Oz’s build, but was outbid by Wallis on auction day.
