Barbie star Margot Robbie forgets her Aussie slang in epic fail on live TV

The Hollywood actress was left red-faced after she forgot the local meaning of the word “Barbie” during an interview on The Project.

Margot Robbie appears to have forgotten some basic Aussie slang, if her appearance on The Project last night was anything to go by.

The 32-year-old actress was on the show to promote her new film, Barbie, alongside director Greta Gerwig when the show’s co-host, Sam Taunton, brought up the double-meaning behind the word ‘Barbie’ in Aussie culture.

“It means so much to so many people. I’m not sure if Margot told you but the word ‘barbie’ means something else in Australia,” Taunton told Gerwig.

Perplexed by the statement, Queensland-born Robbie asked: “What does it mean here?”

When Taunton explained to Robbie that it was “like a barbecue”, the Hollywood star burst into laughter along with the panel consisting of Hamish Macdonald, Georgie Tunny and Liz Ellis.

“I’m so Barbie now I can’t even … A barbie, yeah, having a barbie,” she laughed, adding, “Don’t blame the blonde hair, blame the jet lag.”

This isn’t the first time Robbie was stumped when it came to Aussie slang words. In a fun video with Vanity Fair back in 2016, the actress tried to translate 50 Australian slang words in four minutes for those not across our locally terminology.

While Robbie effortlessly explained words such as “fair dinkum”, “bludger”, “sheila” and ”dag”, she struggled with the term “doovalacky”.

“I’ve never used the word ‘doovalacky’ in my life. I have no idea what it means,” she said in the video.

The word “doovalacky” is used to describe an unknown item, and is similar to using the terms “thing-a-ma-bob” or “thing-a-ma-jig”.

Robbie was also confused by the homegrown term “to come a gutser”, which means to have an accident, and she also never heard of “dog’s eye”, which is a rhyming slang for meat pie.

The actress has been living in America since the early 2010s, making the move to Hollywood after her stint on the Aussie soap Neighbours.

She has since starred in acclaimed films such as The Wolf of Wall Street,Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, The Suicide Squad and I, Tonya, which scored her a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2018.
