Why Gordon Ramsay thinks Australia’s cuisine rates with the world’s best

As his signature dishes take his mate Matt Moran’s Sydney restaurant by storm, superstar chef reveals the secret ingredient making Australia a player on the world stage.

World famous chef Gordon Ramsay believes Australian cuisine is among the best in the world.

The British chef made the declaration after collaborating with Sydney restaurant Aria to bring his three Michelin-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay to the Harbour City this week.

The three dinners sold out within three minutes, with 6000 extra requests coming in every 60 seconds to find more time.

Headlining the dinners has been chef Matt Abe, who started in the Aria kitchen as a 17-year-old, and now works for Ramsay. He’s Australias only three Michelin starred chef.

“Matt is a testament to his grounding and to now be a big head chef back in Europe, it shows Australian chefs and cuisine and culture is now considered the best in the world,” Ramsay said.

The UK culinary superstar has been filming a television show in Melbourne and flew up to Sydney for 24 hours to meet the team, spend time in the kitchen and attend a dinner and lunch.

Among the lucky few who had tickets to the event were Sydney Roosters captain — NRL star James Tedesco — and chef Miguel Maestre.

His time in Australia sadly coincides with the untimely passing of MasterChef Judge Jock Zonfrillo, which has rocked the industry.

Ramsay said it’s been “important” being around his community at this time. “What it’s done has made the industry much more connected,” he said.

Moran said it’s been a “sad week”.

“Whether in Sydney, Melbourne or around the word, the [culinary] community is very strong. We all know each other, we all look out for each other and when something like this happens, it only strengths our bond.”

Ramsay and Moran have been friends for more than 27 years, and along with cheffing share a love of fishing and cars. They hinted there would be more collaborations in the future.
