Where are they now? Kristian Schmid from Neighbours

Kristian Schmid doesn’t know what he’d do if he wasn't an actor. Hospitality would most definitely be out of the question for the 44-year-old, who has been a regular on our television screens for three decades. ‘I don’t drink coffee.’

Hospitality would most definitely be out of the question for the 44-year-old, who has been a regular on our television screens for three decades.

“I am not good at serving coffee, I have no choice,” he laughed. “I don’t drink coffee, I am not good at making it. I have been really lucky, acting has paid my bills pretty consistently for all of those years.”

Fans remember Schmid for different roles he’s played throughout his career, the first of which was playing Todd Landers on Neighbours when it launched in 1988 alongside Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce and Jason Donovan.

He has starred in several films, including 2002s Scooby-doo, and on television series Blue Heelers, All Saints, Sea Patrol and Packed To The Rafters.

More recently he had a recurring role on Home and Away.

“The distinction between reality and make believe in television is blurred sometimes,” he explained. “More recently I seem to be playing weirdo’s and creeps. Looking back, I could have stayed on Neighbours pretty much forever but I really wanted to push myself and try different things. I’ve enjoyed every stage that I’ve been at.”

Schmid is currently working on the stage, appearing in Doctor Shopping as part of the Sydney Fringe at Paddington Hub alongside an ensemble cast that includes Monica Sayers, Patrick James and Rory O’Keeffe.

Aesthetically, Schmid has aged well. He has a few grey hairs and he is definitely not a child actor anymore but still looks very much like the cherubic kid Australian TV viewers fell in love with when he was on Neighbours.

“I sleep in an ice chamber,” he joked.

In his personal life, Schmid is married to ARN news reader Deborah Clay and the couple have two sons — Oliver, 9, and Leo, 11.
