ONCE the domain of diamante G-strings, barely-there dresses and over the top busty creations from Brynne Edelsten, the Brownlow red carpet has become a barometer of the hottest fashion trends. Here’s what you can expect this year.

ONCE the domain of diamante G-strings, barely-there dresses and over-the-top busty creations from Brynne Edelsten, the Brownlow Medal ceremony has become a barometer of the hottest
red-carpet trends.

Uber WAGs Rebecca Judd and Nadia Bartel are among the trailblazers who have led the change to a more sophisticated, contemporary and cool red carpet.

While many partners of top AFL players like to keep it simple and shun the spotlight, others make it their moment to shine.

And instead of trying to pull together their own looks at the last moment, more and more are turning to stylists to help them access key designers and complete their outfit from head to toe.

Celebrity stylist Lana Wilkinson, who is working with Jessie Murphy, Jordan Ablett, Brit Davis and Ruby Keddie, expects bright colours, embellishment and sculptural shapes with full skirts to be popular tonight.

“Bright hues channelling ’90s Versace cool will definitely make an appearance on the Brownlow red carpet,” she said.

“Women are embracing their power and turning to structured silhouettes. It is all about strong women embracing their bodies and accentuating curves. I think we will see a lot of ball gowns with structured shapes.”

Wilkinson said embellishment elevated a gown and photographed well, which was a factor for the glamour girls with high social media followers.

“This year we will see a nod to old Hollywood glamour with plenty of dresses adorned in jewels. It’s safe but totally on trend and epic when executed correctly,” she said.

Fellow celebrity stylist Elliot Garnaut predicted sheer fabrics and sexy separates would also be key tonight, and we may even see some women wearing the pants.

“Nothing screams confidence like a perfectly fitted pant. But we’re not talking a boring suit situ — we’re talking structured top and trouser combos in flawless cuts, gorgeous embellishment and an ode to years past,” he said.

Melbourne hairdresser to the stars Marie Uva, who is creating eye-catching styles for Rebecca Judd, Nadia Bartel, Davis and Keddie, said many girls were taking inspiration from the recent Emmy Awards and New York Fashion Week.

“We’ll be creating textured looks and loads of volume, definitely no pretty Victoria’s Secret waves,” she said.
