What Sonia Kruger’s therapist told her when she couldn’t sleep over “awkward” Logies speech

The TV presenter had to seek therapy for her improvised Gold Logie acceptance speech, which was she widely panned for after making fun of Hamish Blake. Here’s how she recovered.

Sonia Kruger claims first Golden Logie

Gold Logie winner Sonia Kruger admits she “berated [herself] for a long time,” over her now infamous acceptance speech at the 63rd TV Week Logie Awards.

“I was having trouble sleeping,” Kruger said while hosting the Mercedes-Benz Sydney annual Women in Business lunch on Wednesday.

“I ended up talking to a therapist about it because I was not … I wasn’t letting up on myself at all about it.”

The 57-year-old Big Brother and The Voice presenter took home gold in August 2023, with 1.29 million Australians tuning in to the entertainment industry’s night of nights.

While social media reaction and reviews for Sam Pang, the awards’ first host in more than a decade, were almost 100 per cent glowing — the reaction to Kruger wasn’t quite as glossy.

Kruger raised eyebrows when she made a lighthearted dig at the previous year’s winner Hamish Blake by paraphrasing their mutual agent as saying “I think people are a little over Hamish.”

“Frankly, I’m secretly hoping he’ll leave the agency,” Kruger said.

Kruger later revealed that she’d improvised her speech because she had left her notes in her handbag when her name was announced for the biggest award.

More than 100 prominent Australian media identities attended a lavish long lunch at The Grounds in Eveleigh, including Madeline Holtznagel, Natalie Roser, Michelle Bridges, Kristin Fisher, Kerri-Anne Kennerly, and Montana Cox.

A crowd member asked the panel, which Kruger was leading, about impostor syndrome.

“My therapist said to me, I don’t watch a lot of television, I’m going to start there,” Kruger said.

“’But I want to say Sonia, I think you need to treat yourself with a little bit of kindness’,” Kruger repeated.

‘“And you need to show the compassion that you show to those lovely young men that you work with on that show that you do, Beauty and the Geek’,” she joked.

She has never hosted the reality TV show where socially awkward geniuses share a mansion with beautiful women.

“It kind of put things into perspective,” Kruger said.
