Wanted: Rebecca Gibney to star in, produce new drama with Home and Away’s Steve Peacocke

THINGS don’t usually happen this quick in television — unless of course you’re Rebecca Gibney.

But in just over four months after coming up with the idea of her new TV drama, Wanted, Gibney will tomorrow begin shooting in Brisbane.

“It has happened very fast,” Gibney said of the series commissioned by Seven, which will air next year.

Off the back of her roles in Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door, Winter and Packed To The Rafters, Gibney has become one of Australian television’s most bankable stars.

She and husband Richard Bell thought up the concept for Wanted in April and both will serve as producers.

“It has a lot of black humour, think Thelma & Louise meets Breaking Bad, but it’s got heart,” Gibney said.

“It is an inspirational story about two women forced to confront who they are and whether the lives they live in currently are where they’re meant to be.”

Gibney will star alongside Geraldine Hakewill, former Home and Away hunk Steve Peacocke, and Nicholas Bell.

“It is basically a series about two complete strangers and polar opposites caught up in a deadly car jacking and they are forced basically to rely on each other to survive,” Gibson explained.

“They’re two women with absolutely nothing in common but they end up in an extraordinary situation. It is a rollercoaster road trip across Australia.”

Peacocke will play a police officer trying to find the women.

“I wanted to play something with a bit more of a rough edge, a bit more ordinary. It is definitely a series and hopefully if it is received well, we will be doing some more after that,” Peacocke said.

Shooting will take place throughout Queensland, from the Daintree to the outback.

“We want to show how big and gorgeous this country is as well. The landscape will play a character as much as we will as well,” Gibney said.
