South by Southwest has today announced that Tumbalong Park will be a part of the week-long festival that Sydneysiders can access for free.
The Daily Telegraph has also been announced as the presenting partner of the Tumbalong Park Stage, which will offer the public a taster of the broader festivities taking place across the Harbour City, including technology demos, live music and radio broadcasts, and conference speakers.
“At The Daily Telegraph we’re for a vibrant and exciting Sydney. And that’s exactly what SXSW Sydney will create for a week in October,” Editor Ben English said.
“We hope to see all Sydneysiders – and visitors to our great state – enjoying for free the best in show content, be it screenings, bands, presentations or live radio shows, on the Tumbalong Park Stage presented by The Daily Telegraph – elevating Sydney’s reputation as the southern hemisphere’s home of innovation and creativity.’’
Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park will be transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation from October 15-22, and free activities will include the likes of augmented reality hosted at Snapchat House, to drone technology test drives of Rovers on the other side of the country, and the UTS Electric Motorsport team’s 2023 car reveal.
The live music lineup at Tumbalong features local up-and-comers like Jem Cassar-Daley, the daughter of Aussie country music star Troy Cassar-Daley, The Terrys, These New South Whales, and more.
“We are delighted to be sharing SXSW Sydney with the whole city,” SXSW Chair Geoff Jones said.
SXSW last week announced Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker as a headline speaker, in addition to Chance the Rapper in the stacked program over one thousand events.
“Having to quickly provide a personal quote for a press release about how excited I am to join the inaugural Sydney-flavoured SXSW event is exactly the sort of thing ChatGPT is for, but I’ve written this one myself because I still care about our species, dammit,” Brooker said. “Although I initially misspelt “inaugural” just then until I got corrected by a machine, so actually maybe we’re just rubbish. This tense love-hate relationship with technology is what Black Mirror is all about.”
