Capping off an extraordinary year, Troye Sivan is Australia’s Man of the Year.
The top Aussie singer won big at the recent ARIA Awards and is nominated for his first Grammy.
Last night, at a star studded black carpet event at the iconic Bondi Pavilion, the superstar singer received the top honour at the annual GQ Australia Men of the Year in Association with BOSS.
This is sort of the year that I hope for every year in a way,” Sivan told The Daily Telegraph. “I am just very grateful that it has all happened in the way that it has and that it is happening now, it just feels very special.”
Sivan, who attended with brothers Tyde and Steele, this year released his album, Something
To Give Each Other, and has had huge global success with hits Rush, One Of Your Girls and Got Me Started.
“I am feeling awesome, I am here with my brothers, I love my outfit, I am just excited to have a good time tonight,” Sivan said. “It feels very relaxed, loosey goosy.”
Sivan, 28, received his award from Hollywood star Ross Lynch, who appears in the video clip for his global hit, One Of Your Girls.
The black tie event honours the best of the best across categories covering sport, fashion, music, social media and modelling.
Nathan Cleary was named Sportsman of the Year while The Matilda’s scored Team of the Year after their unifying performance at the World Cup earlier this year.
Player Kyah Simon, attending with partner Faye Bryson, was on hand to accept the award.
“It has been a massive year for us with a home World Cup here we really captured the hearts of the nation,” Simon said. “Although we didn’t win a trophy or a medal, I think we captured something way more important in terms of inspiring the next generation.”
In other awards, Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Riley Keough, and Gina Gammell, won
Women in Film, Robert Irwin was named Social Force and Adam Briggs is the year’s Australian Icon.
Nelly Furtado sent a video message of support to honour Dom Dolla as Solo Artist of the Year while Willow Smith took to the stage to present Eddie Benjamin with Breakthrough Musician of the Year.
“He is so talented, the proficiency with which he plays so many instruments is crazy and you don’t really ever see that kind of talent nowadays so you’ve got to cherish it,” Smith said of Benjamin. “You’ve got to make sure people see it. And hopefully live our lives in a way that we can get a little bit of that talent.”
Benjamin grew up in the area and said he recorded his first piece of music ever at the Bondi Pavilion.
“It is quite a full circle moment to say the least,” he said. “There’s definitely multiple projects coming from me next year. I have been working on a lot of very special things.”
