It is either an innocent faux pas or a brutal snub but Tracy Grimshaw has signed off from A Current Affair with a bang.
Video footage of Grimshaw refusing a farewell hug from her rumoured ACA replacement, Ally Langdon, is going viral.
The moment was captured as the 62-year-old TV veteran made her way through a guard of honour of sorts in the Nine Sydney studios after filming her final episode on Thursday night.
She hugged Nine newsreader Peter Overton but while Today co-host Langdon moved forward, Grimshaw shook her head and appeared to say no before moving on for a hug and a kiss from Karl Stefanovic.
Langdon held both hands up in confusion while still smiling.
The moment has been spread far and wide on social media with many claiming it exposes a long-time rivalry between the pair.
One insider noted Grimshaw had long disliked Langdon, who she felt had been gunning for her job at the network.
“Tracy simply doesn’t like Ally,” the source said.
“It is as simple as that. Tracy is not able to pretend, if she doesn’t like someone, she will show it.
“Ally has made no secret of wanting the hosting job at ACA and that hasn’t gone down well with Tracy.”
A senior executive at Nine though hosed down the suggestion, stating: “There is no doubt it is an awkward moment but there is no drama there, it was nothing untoward. It was a genuine faux pas.”
Michael Rowland from ABC News Breakfast re-enacted the footage with colleagues. In his TikTok video, he snubbed sports presenter Tony Armstrong.
“And so nice of my colleagues to give me a guard of …,” he wrote.
Stefanovic commented on the post with “Hahahaha Tonyyyyyyy”.
Langdon chimed in with, “Nooooo – it’s too soon!!!!!”.
On air on Friday, Stefanovic and Langdon weighed in on the brutal moment.
“That’s the moment my heart breaks,” Langdon said as they played back footage.
“Look how red my face is. I just got brushed. I don’t think Tracy knows who I am. It was a tough moment.”
The pair shared a statement from Grimshaw claiming to clear up the incident as a misunderstanding.
“I’m sorry I missed you, was so overwhelmed and obviously didn’t see your petite head once Karl’s big boofhead loomed into vision. Argh, big sorry x.’’
Grimshaw meanwhile filmed her final episode of ACA on Thursday after 17 years hosting the current affairs show.
Drinks were held at Nine’s North Sydney headquarters after the episode aired.
