Three years after being crowned winner of The Voice, Alfie Arcuri is still putting in the hard yards to make his music mark.
Releasing a new single titled Same, Arcuri had to fight hard to release the song himself after producers expressed interest in having a big name international artist record the track.
“We got blocked (from doing anything with the song) for a year because they loved the song that much,” Arcuri explained.
“We were in this tug-of-war for a year beacuase they wanted to pitch it to one of their artists and I wanted to release it myself as it is one of my favourite tracks. Finally I kind of won and I have released it.
“The last three years I have worked my arse off to try and make this career work and stay relevant. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Arcuri, 31, wrote the song while on a trip to LA 18 months ago, penning the track “about my only two exes”.
“It is about your first love and replacing them with a rebound I guess,” The Voice 2016 winner explained.
“I think a lot of people probably relate to the message of the song.”

Writing songs for other artists is something Arcuri is increasingly open to.
“It can be quite lucrative,” he said.
“I have become a little less precious because a lot of the songs I write are very personal so I found it hard the idea of giving it to someone. But music is hard so if someone picked up my song, that would be amazing.”
Arcuri lives in Sydney’s Elizabeth Bay with his partner Ash Frenken and their five-month-old pup, Gary, and cat Priscilla, who they adopted from Delta Goodrem when she moved back to Los Angeles last year.
He was vocal during the marriage equality debate and made a decision early on in his career not to hide his sexuality for fear or favour.
“There is something powerful about being authentic, it feels good. I didn’t just decide to do music just to float around so if I don’t challenge myself, what is the point of doing it?” he said.
“I was an architect before and I studied for a long time to do that. I am not going to be someone or something I am not.”
This week, Ellen Reed hit out at producers of The Voice after returning to the reality singing show as an All Star but failing to make it through the first round of auditions.
Arcuri, who competed against Reed in the grand final of his year, said he felt for her.
“I actually struggled to watch because I know how important music is to her and how hard she works,” Arcuri said.
“To me, it didn’t actually make sense because she was a finalist in my season and for no one to turn around for her I felt like that was strange. Ellen is a really tough woman so I am pretty sure she will use this to become a stronger person.”
