THE real life love story between Jessica Origliasso and Ruby Rose may have created the template for The Veronicas new video clip but they’ve clearly taken some artistic licence with the short film that is undoubtedly the pop singers most controversial video clip to date.
Graphic scenes feature in the film for new single On Your Side that stars real life partners Jess and Ruby documenting a love story between two women, one of whom is addicted to drugs.
“Lisa and I have always been drawn to unconventional and honest story telling through our music; Ruby brought this to the forefront in our video,” explained Jess Origliasso.
“Ruby is known for creating powerful and intensely affecting work and being given the opportunity to collaborate with her artistic force has been an incredible experience, both personally and professionally.”
It is expected Rose will walk the red carpet with The Veronicas at the 30th annual ARIA Awards next Wednesday, at which the duo is up for three awards.
Jessica’s twin sister, Lisa, doesn’t appear in the clip that Rose wrote and directed as well as stars in. It was through making the clip in Auckland over a weekend last month that Rose and Origliaso revealed through social media that they’d rekindled their romance a few years after breaking up.
Rose, of Orange Is The New Black fame, was previously engaged to Roald Dahl’s granddaughter Phoebe while Origliasso once dated American rocker Billy Corgan.
They’ve not held back in the clip, that includes happy scenes of Rose and Origliasso’s characters loved-up, kissing, in a bubble bath and frolicking on the bed in their underwear.
Counter to the happy scenes, other parts of the film show Rose’s character overdosing on drugs and being beaten up in a bar.
“When the girls spoke about making a video it occurred to me they had never done an entirely narrative based video, one without the use of singing to camera,” she said of the clip.
“I felt compelled to write a short film for it. As both a director and an actor It was great to work with Jessica. I was blown away by what a naturally gifted actor she is.”
