The song that hits so hard you’ll never hear it live

Amber Lawrence wrote You Were Mine in honour of her unborn second child. It’s so raw the country star recorded it for her album but that’s likely the only way fans will hear it.

Track number 10 on Amber Lawrence’s new album is one the country music star most likely won’t ever play live in front of fans.

You Were Mine was written about the death of her unborn second child, Woody, when she was 21 weeks pregnant.

“It is a beautiful song,” Lawrence told The Daily Telegraph.

“Yes it is immortalising what we went through as a family, paying tribute to a little boy that never had a chance and it is a song for other people who have been through that.”

Lawrence and husband Marty Newman are also parents to three-year-old son Ike.

She wrote the song with fellow singer songwriter Lyn Bowtell about six weeks after Woody’s death in 2020.

The track features on Lawrence’s seventh studio album Living For The Highlights.

“I don’t think I will sing it to be honest,” she said. “It is a really sad place, I don’t think people want to be taken there. I have sung it on TikTok a few times, just me and the piano, but in terms of doing it in a show, I don’t think it is the right place to sing it.

“I like people to have a good time at my shows. The sadder songs in my albums are for your own personal reflective moments.”

She added: “So much of that stuff to do with pregnancy, miscarriage, you don’t want to talk about it. It can feel like failure and it is very personal too, it is your body, but it is also such a big thing to go through that if you don’t talk about it, you are living with this secret, this little bit of sadness hanging over you at all times.

“I wanted to include it on the album for that reason, for my own ability to move on.”

Five-time Golden Guitar Award winner Lawrence points out though that the whole album is not sad.

There are upbeat songs like the title track, as well as Bring It Back, Rise and Making Up For Lost Wine.

“I am that kind of person, sad things can happen and hard things happen and you look on the bright side and find happiness in your life,” she said.

“It is a positive album definitely but there are lots of moments of it not all being sugar and spice.”
