The Kid Laroi’s younger brother is following in his footsteps, signing a major global publishing deal with Sony Music in the United States.

Auz the Kid, real name Austin Edward Muston Howard, is the 16-year-old sibling of superstar Australian chart topper Laroi, who was born Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard.

“When I was about 13, Laroi was inviting me into (studio) sessions with him and Khaled. I used to watch them and listen, look at how you could change stuff and pull it all together and that’s how I realised I wanted to do it for sure,” Auz the Kid told The Daily Telegraph.

“My focus is my music and creating. I’m so grateful to be able to get my work out there. My brother has told me a lot of stories and situations of how other people have messed up, so I don’t go down that road. He’s guided me in a very good direction for sure.

“Without Laroi, I probably wouldn’t know as much, for sure. He has pointed me in the right direction.”

The Kid Laroi, 19, of course is one of the most successful artists to come out of Australia in decades, smashing the charts with hits including Without You, featuring Miley Cyrus, and Stay, with Justin Bieber.

Both boys grew up in Broken Hill before moving to Sydney, where they lived in Redfern. Their parents both worked in music.

The Broken Hill boy knew he was destined for the arts, coming from a musical family.

“When I was in Broken Hill, I knew I wasn’t going to be in an office job. I wanted to be like an actor or something,” Auz the Kid said.

“But then when Laroi moved to Adelaide, he had people around him who were DJing and producing and they offered to teach me. That was when I realised that’s what I want to be. So, I started researching it and then from about sixth grade I told everyone I wanted to be a music producer when I grew up. They were like, ‘yeah whatever’.”

Growing up, he would listen to artists like Erica Badu and Tupac.

As to any comparisons with his older brother, Auz the Kid said: “I don’t compare anything with Laroi as music is very subjective … very different. If we both made tracks, you can’t compare because they are both very different.

“We are very honest with each other. If something’s a bit off, he’ll tell me to change it and redo it. And I do the same, tell him to switch it up a little. It’s about giving each other advice, not comparing.”
