The Camperdown house where global smash comedy Colin From Accounts was filmed

The stars and creators of Colin From Accounts explain why the inner west was best for their global smash comedy.

Ashley flashes a breast at Gordon as she’s crossing the road, and Gordon hits a dog.

And so begins the story of Colin from Accounts — not only the name of the dog, but also of the eight-part series made by and starring and created by Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer

They play two single (ish), complex people who are funny and flawed.

The Los Angeles-based couple returned to Sydney for six months to film the second season of the “comfort food” series, which is streaming now on Binge.

As the complex and hilarious stories unravel, those charmed by the series have naturally become curious as to where it was filmed.

Sydney Confidential has done some digging and can reveal a number of those places.

Gordon’s stereotypical hipster abode, which Ashley moves into because she’s kicked out of her Redfern share house (thanks to her landlord’s no pets rule), is a former sewing factory.

The brick exterior of 33 Hopetoun Street in Camperdown is marked with a large painted number ‘33’ and the green garage is featured throughout both seasons.

Ashley hilariously throws a poo out of the upstairs bathroom window in season one, and blames it on Colin, after she finds the plumbing isn’t working.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom house last sold in 2010 for $2.9 million.

The interiors appear to have been renovated since then, with the updated kitchen colours and furnishings we now see on the show.

In the first season, shot in 2021 amid the COVID pandemic, Colin From Accounts was filmed across Marrickville, Leichhardt and Redfern. Filming was wrapped by March 2022.

Filming commenced more than a year later for the second season, in November 2023.

In that time, the real-life Marrickville brewery that is the home of Gordon’s fictional (and also cash strapped) Echo Park closed down.

Stockade Brew Co announced they were closing “for now, not forever,” in March 2023.

The Cadogan Street venue gained notoriety as a brewery location in the Australian comedy series and was one of 13 destinations on the official Inner West Ale Trail.

A producer told Confidential that the entire interior had to be rebuilt for season two.

The show’s creators, Dyer and Brammall, said they chose iconic and everyday settings to bring authenticity and a sense of place to the series.

“The inner west made sense as the setting for the brewery and it has such a lovely aesthetic,” Brammall said. “Industrial but old houses, Victorian terraces, right next to warehouse. The flat paths are great for filming. It’s a very interesting area.”

“A share house in the Redfern/Surry Hills area felt very real,” Dyer added.

The hospital where Ashley and her best friend Meggles (Sarah Roberts) are doing their 6th year medical studies is a real training hospital, that Colin from Accounts used during the school holidays.

It’s the University of Technology Sydney training hospital in Ultimo.

Meanwhile, Yvette the vet’s office is the Old Gladesville Hospital on Punt Road — which also doubles as the office of Gordon’s neurologist.

“We realise we’ve made 16 episodes in Sydney and not showed a single drop of ocean,” Dyer told Confidential. “If Gordon and Ashley went to Bondi people would be confused. They’re too pale,” she joked.

However, there will be some water displayed in episode six of season two, that we’re told was shot in the Sutherland Shire.
