Tributes are flowing for Charlie Newling, who died after plunging his car off a Dover Heights cliff, just months after becoming a father for the second time.

A former reality star has died with his car found at the bottom of a Sydney cliff.

Troubled Bachelorette contestant Charlie Newling, 36, appeared on Ali Oetjen’s season of the reality dating show in 2018.

The 36-year-old became a father for the second time just two months ago.

Tributes have been shared about Newling, who died when his car plunged from a cliff at Dover Heights on Saturday.

“I guess you never really know someone is suffering until it’s too late,” friend Cameron Bargwanna wrote on Facebook.

Even though life took us into different directions over the years and we grew apart, the memories and the moments of countless hours at your place playing ball will be forever in my memories and cherished moments of life mate. Not to mention that break dance you did up on stage at assembly.”

Specialist paramedics and police were called to the cliff off Liverpool Street early Saturday morning following reports a car had driven through a fence and over the edge of the cliff.

Emergency services, including the Polair chopper, remained at the scene for much of Saturday.

Newling was a popular contestant on The Bachelorette. With an initial ‘nice guy’ edit, he was a frontrunner to win Oetjen’s heart on the Ten dating show but was later called out by viewers for his behaviour towards Oetjen as “triggering” and “possessive”.

Taste Radley eventually won the season, although he and Oetjen subsequently broke up.

After being voted off the show, Newling made headlines when footage was released showing him being wrestled to the ground by security outside Sydney’s Golden Sheaf after being denied entry to the pub.

In September last year, he was convicted of threatening to torture and kill his stepfather in a series of 37 disturbing text messages.

In court, Magistrate Ross Hudson acknowledged Newling suffered significant childhood trauma, including having to care for his biological father when he was a teenager after his father had an accident and became paraplegic. His father later died in 2018 from an overdose of pain medication.

At the time of the threats, he was on a court order following a mid-range drink driving offence in 2021.

Magistrate Hudson sentenced Newling to a 13-month prison sentence to be serviced in the community by way of an intensive correction order.
