2DAY FM is again in damage control after yet another breakfast show has imploded.
Comedian Harley Breen this morning announced he was quitting the Em Rusciano with Harley Breen breakfast show and will be replaced by Ed Kavalee.
“I’m heading back to the fiscally responsible job of being a touring stand up — very smart,” he joked this morning.
“It’s by no means an easy decision, but it’s absolutely the right one.
“I love a lot of things that I’ve been fortunate enough to have in my life: my fiancee, my boys, and stand up. So I’ve made the choice to give those things my full attention going into the future.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given, and grateful to you Em for vouching for me — nay, flat-out forcing me on the people of Sydney.”
It’s the latest blow to a series of controversies to embattle a string of hosts in the 2Day FM breakfast timeslot, not least of which is the fact Rusciano hosts the Sydney show out of Melbourne.
Rusciano and Kavalee will be the newest team to host the cursed 2Day FM brekky show as Austereo struggles to sign a ratings success following Kyle and Jackie O’s defection to KIIS FM in November 2013.
Since then, there has been a revolving door of hosts which has included Sophie Monk, Jules Lund, Marrick Watts, Maz Comption, Dan Debuf, Rove McManus and Sam Frost.
On air, Rusciano broke down as she thanked him for joining her.
“I’m very sad you’re leaving. We’re great mates,” she told him tearfully. “Obviously everyone will be shocked, but I’m still here.”
In a statement, The Hit Network’s Head of Content Gemma Fordham described Kavalee as “superbly talented”.
“We know the Sydney listeners will love the addition of Ed to the show.”
Breen told his Instagram followers this morning he would be finishing up at the end of the year.
“It was by no means an easy decision. But it’s absolutely the right one. I love a lot of things that I’ve been fortunate enough to have in my life. I love my fiancée (i just looked up fiancée and it is a problematic word... she’s my girlfriend. the love of my life, me mate, my best friend.) I love my boys and raising them with my mate... and I love stand-up,” he wrote online.
“So I’ve made the choice to give those things my full attention going into the future... At regular speed... I’m not announcing time travel.
“I am grateful for the opportunity, to Em Rusciano for vouching for me, nay flat out forcing me on the people of Sydney, and to the Hit network for taking a chance, and backing me. I’ll pop by next year at 8.55am with a coffee. And for what it’s worth I think Ed Kavalee is a brilliant decision for the roll and I hope the show becomes the raging success it deserves to be.”
