Social media is abuzz after the ex-girlfriend of Thanasi Kokkinakis had a red carpet moment that sparked deja vu from an Italian design house.
Confidential received side-by-side comparison showing Aussie influencer Hannah Dal Sasso in a custom gown from Sydney designer, Velani, she wore to the Glamour on the Grid F1 party in Melbourne last week.
The images show Dal Sasso’s outfit next to the Schiaparelli dress worn by Russian model and socialite Tatiana Korsakova to the BAFTA Awards in February.
Dal Sasso’s look was put together by stylist Paul Versace, of Styled by Bloom.
“We’re all inspired by overseas designers,” Velani’s Nicky Apostolopoulos told Confidential, stating that taking inspiration from a look “doesn’t make it copying or stealing”.
Apostolopoulos noted her creation was changed in ways to make it unique and suit the needs of her client.
“Hannah loved the gown, I did suggest making some changes,” she said.
“We didn’t do a bow, instead we did a knot, we made the bodice more black and she didn’t wear gloves.
“I love blue and black so I suggested that and it just happened that we had a fitting the day after the BAFTAS, and we saw the blue and black version on the red carpet.
“It was a beautiful gown and I think we did the original credit.”
Apostolopoulos, who is not selling the dress to her customers, said she made custom dresses based on her client’s desires and that they often bring in images as inspiration.
“What do you do? Say, ‘oh sorry, I can’t make you a dress because it’s a Schiaperelli gown?’,” Apostolopoulos said.
“Yes, it was a wonderful influence and I’m not going to sit there and say I designed the gown. I think we did a lovely tribute, and that’s what she (Dal Sasso) loved and I think she looked amazing.”
Dal Sasso’s look was paired with diamonds from Temelli Jewellery.
“We pull inspiration from everywhere, and we try our best to change and create a new moment for everyone,” Versace told Confidential.
“I think Nicky did put her own take on it, and she worked really hard on that gown too.
“What we ended up doing for Hannah was a perfect kind of aesthetic for what she wanted to wear. She looked beautiful.”
Dal Sasso has also been contacted for comment.
The copycats don’t stop there — Confidential has uncovered several more look alike designs.
House of CB has been repeatedly “copied” by various brands, including Australian labels like Showpo and BabyBoo Fashion, who have allegedly mimicked their luxurious designs.
Showpo’s Lily Max Dress, priced at $83, bears a striking resemblance to House of CB’s Seren Maxi Dress, which is priced at $382.
Similarly, BabyBoo Fashion seems to have replicated House of CB’s Charmaine Corset Maxi Dress, also priced at $382, with their version selling for just $112.
Target has also come under fire for offering budget-friendly alternatives to high-end designer pieces.
They recently released a $30 dress which was very similar to a $550 Anna Quan dress and appeared to copy the design of the popular Posse Zayla black maxi dress, which retails for $339, with their own version priced at just $30.
