Carlton Football Club player Harris was subjected to horrific “trolling” and disgusting remarks after a photo of her kicking was uploaded to the 7AFL Twitter page.

While the backlash has been huge, Lane said several instances in the AFLW have contributed to the larger community progressing.
“Some of the abuse Harris was subjected to was sexist,” Lane told Confidential.
“Some of it was violent. She was being sexualised and violated through words in a public place; examples of misogyny writ large.
“A positive reflection is that this is another example of the power and importance of AFLW.
“Here, thanks to and through AFLW, we’re seeing the AFL and society broadly discussing issues that are game-changing on and off the field. It’s why AFLW is a movement bigger than sport.”
Lane is well-versed on the topic, having written ROAR, the award-winning book about the birth of AFLW that featured a chapter on Harris even before this incident.
She said the public support Harris had received had been “affirming”, and labelled Harris’s handling of the situation “outstanding”.
