Sydney is a character in and of itself in new Hollywood blockbuster, The Fall Guy.

Starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, the movie was filmed in and around the city from October last year through to March.

The first look trailer has been released out of the United States overnight, with director David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick very much highlighting the Harbour City on the big screen.

“It was absolutely incredible to shoot there and we wanted to display it,” McCormick told Confidential.

“It is not that often that it (Sydney) shows up in movies itself. There are so many movies that are shot on your stages so it was a really special opportunity for us.”

The powerhouse husband and wife duo could have easily filmed the movie in Australia but made it so the location was seen as a universal one.

Not so though. The Sydney Opera House can be seen in the trailer, as can the Harbour Bridge.

In January, iconic landmarks were shut down for filming to take place. The CBD light rail and Dawes Point at the Rocks were also shut down intermittently to film the movie adaptation of a popular 1980s television series.

The original TV series followed a stuntman who used his skills and Hollywood experience to pursue criminals, sometimes while in disguise.

“This is a story about a stuntman on location and I spent a year of my life as a stunt performer on the Matrix sequels in Sydney,” said Leitch, himself a former stuntman for the likes of Brad Pitt and Jean-Claude Van Damme who has directed Bullet Train, Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. “I had memories about being a stuntman there so it just felt like I could access a lot creatively if we were in Sydney and it made total sense to me as a film maker being there. The movie is about the making of a movie so it allowed us to see a guy in a city that is not his digs but he is there running around getting into mischief.”

The Fall Guy is slated for release in February and will also star Hannah Waddingham, Stephanie Hsu and Teresa Palmer.

The pair praised Federal and State authorities for allowing the ambitious production to shoot in such iconic locations. The Federal government gave the production a $30 million grant, in addition to $14.5 million from the state government, as part of the Made in NSW fund.

“It was really ambitious to get the permits,” Leitch said. “We had to be on our game.”

McCormick added: “To give us the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge and to give us really iconic buildings and streets is a lot for your city.”
