JULIA Newbery has probably set a few hearts aflame as a model but she’s just as good at extinguishing fires in her work with Otford Rural Fire Brigade.
The 23-year-old was among the emergency crews battling south-western Sydney’s bushfires last week.
“I helped put the fires out ... and then we got the rake hoes and cleared a path for everyone to get through,” she said.
Newbery signed with Chic Model Management last year and has shot campaigns for brands such as Surf Dive ‘n’ Ski and Lena Kasparian.
She said her firefighter peers were very supportive of her catwalk career.
“They think it’s funny that I can look so girlie and when there’s a fire I can be covered in soot,” she said.
“When you’re battling a fire, how you look is the last thing on your mind.”
Newbery joined her local brigade three years ago.
“I always looked up to everyone in the fireys,” she said.
