Supermarket charges Sydneysiders $4.41 for a luxe night out with wine and cheese

An exclusive pop-up bar is in town for two nights only. Here’s how you can score a luxe night out with wine and cheese for less than five bucks.

KFC has entered the world of fine dining

Discount supermarket chain Aldi is opening a pop-up bar in Sydney, charging customers less than $5 for a wine tasting experience.

Proving the finer things in life don’t need to cost a bomb, patrons will be served wines from the supermarket’s range accompanied by a cheese platter — all for $4.41.

The German retailer’s award-winning gin will also be served at the CBD bar, called The Trophy Room.

It’s the latest immersive marketing campaign from a big-name brand in Australia. In April fast-food giant KFC teamed up with top chef Nelly Robinson to open a fancy degustation restaurant in Sydney for three nights only. More than 20,000 people made a reservation request.

Similar to the KFC experience, customers will have to book online to attend The Trophy Room or put their names on the waitlist.

Anais De Vierman hopes to be one of those to score a booking.

“My sister’s in town and we both love a fun night out and some great wine,” she said.

Those who manage to score a seat at the bar will sample some of Aldi’s gold-medal winning gin on arrival and then be treated to a tasting experience the red and white wines varieties that are stocked at the supermarket and which come from regions like Margaret River and McLaren Vale.

The opening of the boujee wine bar follows the recent ALDI Price Report 2022, which revealed 44 per cent of Australians have cut back on going out to restaurants and bars this year due to the rising cost of living.

Aldi’s Wine Expert and Buying Director Jason Bowyer explained he hoped the bar showed that while customers might be cutting back on some of life’s luxuries because of the rising cost of living, they don’t have to compromise on quality.

The bar will open for two nights only: Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16
