SUNRISE sports reporter Mark Beretta has spoken from his Sydney hospital bed following a horrific waterskiing accident at the weekend.
The 51-year-old, who has won 10 Australian water ski championships, took an ugly turn, ripping his quadriceps muscle off the bone and smashing his knee cap.
“Honestly I was having the best day ever and I was out there for a ski. I was out probably reliving glory days for a little bit. I was going a little bit harder than I should have as you do when you get to this stage of life and I’ve come around a turn,” he said.

“I’ve hooked in turned the ski, turned it too hard — my legs gone one way and my body has gone the other. I came up and there were bits of me pointing in all directions.
“You know sometimes things that are really bad don’t hurt that much? I was in shock — I had the shakes but it wasn’t really, really painful.”
Ironically, Beretta was taken to Sunshine Coast hospital where he attended on Friday with reporter Natalie Barr for a fundraiser.
“I got a first hand look at how good the hospital is — so I said to the guys, ‘I really wanted to come and look to see how good it was’,” he joked.
Beretta is now recovering near his home in North Sydney. He told viewers he had to wear the brace for six weeks but he expected to be back on TV during the week.
