“After E.T. came out every endorsement deal on the planet came running at us and he (Spielberg) told me not to do that,” Barrymore told The Saturday Telegraph.
“He said no, don’t do that, have a broad vision and don’t sell out, go for the long run.
“For me it was so clear, don’t sell out, don't name slap, don’t do a lot of endorsements, don’t sell a lot of shit.
“He was trying to say: stay pure and have longevity if you want it.
“I don’t know why at seven years old that made so much sense to me.”
While other stars have sold everything from coffee to watches, Barrymore held back until a few years ago when she launched her own make-up range, Flower Beauty, that has become a global business success.
Today, Barrymore will meet fans at Westfield Parramatta before her three-day Australian visit comes to an end.
“I barely endorse anything,” she said.
“I am a geek. I am a girl who dances around in her closet getting ready for a date knowing that might be the best part of the date.”
