Negotiations for an Australian tour for the girl power group are understood to have fallen through after Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell wouldn’t sign up to the shows, which Confidential understands is because she doesn’t need the money.
“The Australian public really wanted it and the Australian promoters really wanted it too,” a touring source told Confidential. “It never really got off the ground though because of Ginger.”
All of major tour promoters — including Live Nation — put in enticing offers to lure the reunited Spice Girls — Melanie ‘Sporty’ Chisholm, Emma ‘Baby’ Bunton and Mel B ‘Scary’ — Down Under off the back of sold out shows across the UK in June.
Millions of dollars was on the table in what promoters believed would have been a sell out tour due to the Wannabe singers massive fanbase here.
Scary Spice Mel B set Aussie fans into a frenzy with talk of a stadium tour here by announcing at the end of the girls final London show that they will join forces again in February.
“We’ll see you in February in Australia,” Mel B said at London’s Wembley Arena, later backtracking on the comments by saying the tour isn’t yet locked in.
And it seems Halliwell was the sticking point to locking in dates.
It was of course Ginger Spice that originally left the group in 1998 citing depression and differences between members of the group as her reason.
The 47-year-old, who Robbie Williams famously once carried in a duffel bag to escape paparazzi, is understood to have turned down the offer “because she doesn’t need the cash”.
Halliwell is married to Christian Horner, who has a net worth of more than $US50 million and is a former racing car driver and current Red Bull Racing Formula One team manager.
Since marrying Horner in 2015, it has been well documented that mother of two Halliwell has overhauled her image from pop star to upper class socialite.
Having grown up in Watford, a 2016 article questioned Halliwell’s accent with the headline: “Spice Girl turns posh housewife for Bake Off”.
The headline came from Halliwell taking part in charity event, the Great Sport Relief Bake Off.
