Lee Lin Chin resigns from SBS

In a piece of pure TV theatre, iconic newsreader Lee Lin Chin announced her resignation from SBS just moments before the launch of the station’s annual media showcase.

As journalists, some flown in from interstate, gathered for the launch at Beta Bar in Sydney, Chin, who has been with SBS for 30 years, gave news maven Sandra Sully from rival network Channel 10 the exclusive on her decision to leave.

Chin, who fronts SBS World News, is arguably the station’s hottest property — her personal Twitter account has more followers than the network’s. She made history in 2016 when she became the first SBS personality in the station’s history to be nominated for a Gold Logie.

The timing of her announcement, just minutes before the media showcase, and her decision to rain on SBS’s launch parade would appear to be calculated for maximum impact.

“There’s not one big reason, there’s many small to medium-sized reasons, which for the time being I wish to keep to myself but may talk about one day. One reason I shall reveal however is that working two days a week didn’t give me enough time to devote to the pub and re-reading the complete works of Shakespeare. So now that I work zero days that issue has been addressed,” she said, leaving publicists scrambling as rehearsals went ahead for the launch.

Journalist Anton Enus, who has battled bowel cancer for two years, but was given the all clear in March, will step in to present two bulletins a week.
