A mixed field of athletes, entertainers, reality stars and even a former politician have made the cut for the 2021 season of SAS Australia.

Controversial retired NRL player Sam Burgess is a confirmed frontrunner after months of speculation, alongside Olympic athletes including Kerri Pottharst, Jana Pittman and John Steffensen.

Socialite Brynne Edelsten is in the running, as is notorious Bra Boy and surfer Koby Abberton, sports reporter, singer and former beauty queen Erin Holland, ironman Jett Kenny and singer Pete Murray.

The celebrity contestants are understood to be spending the next fortnight competing in various physical and mental challenges as they undertake a gruelling SAS selection course under the guidance of elite British ex-Special Forces soldiers Ant Middleton, Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham, Jason ‘Foxy’ Fox and Ollie Ollerton.

“Living in our world will be the rawest and most brutal life lesson these celebrities will ever experience,” chief instructor Middleton said. “We aren’t holding anything back, it’s as authentic as it gets.”

Last year marked the first season of the format in Australia, proving a massive hit for the Seven Network and providing many controversial moments.

It was shot near Jindabyne while this year’s season is being filmed near the Blue Mountains.

AFLW player Sabrina Frederick, radio funnyman Merrick Watts and Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins were the three recruits to pass SAS selection in the first series.
