The dust may be still be settling on his shock split from wife Phoebe but Sam Burgess is now approaching the next phase of his high-profile marriage collapse — the asset division.

Friends close to the Rabbitohs star confirm lawyers have been engaged by both parties in what is shaping to be a costly carve-up of the bustling Brit’s hefty fortune which includes the couple’s $4 million mansion (where Phoebe is currently residing) and a $1 million apartment in Little Cove where the Burgess matriarch Julie is living.

Interestingly, Phoebe and Sam almost snapped up another big property buy recently — a massive $6 million pad in Dover Heights. However despite inspecting the home they baulked at the sale and pulled the pin.

There is also Burgess’s whopping NRL earnings which amount to about a million bucks per season — a deal he has sewn up with Souths until 2022.

A source close to Burgess’s camp said that while he and Phoebe had both spoken to lawyers, the asset breakdown was unlikely to be “too nasty” as Sam is committed to providing for his two young children Poppy and Billy.

The high-profile Bunny was seen out and about on Saturday for the first time since returning from a brief convalescence at the rural retreat owned by Russell Crowe.

Burgess appeared in surprisingly high spirits as he strolled with an unknown pal along Glebe Point Rd, stopping for a coffee and brunch at Dirty Red cafe before browsing Glebe markets. At one point he even flashed a smile after a fan yelled his name.
