Tree lover Russell Crowe has faith in the arborists employed by the Centennial Park & Moore Park Trust, despite experts saying they are killing his trees.

Crowe paid $35,000 to have seven Moreton Bay figs planted in Centennial Park in 2008.

Each one has its own plaque featuring a dedication from the actor to close friends and family, including his ex-wife Danielle Spencer, the late chef Justin Bull and the Irwin family.

A decade on, photographs obtained by Sunday Confidential show the actor’s generous gifts appear on the brink of death.

According to locals and arborists, the once flourishing trees look sad and diseased.

“There is definitely something not right with those trees,” one arborist, who has been in the industry for three decades said.

“They obviously have some stunted growth and their leaf coverage is not ideal. It also looks like they might be nutrient deficient. But there was an outbreak of a fig leaf beetle a while ago which might be affecting them. They definitely look like they are struggling to some degree.”

While Crowe wouldn’t weigh in on the state of his treasured trees, he told Sunday Confidential he has every confidence in the Centennial Parklands caretakers.

“I love Moreton Bay figs, a passion I shared with Kerry Packer,” he said.

“I’ve planted about 37,000 trees so far in my life. The site was identified by the arborist team at the park, there’s no reason not to trust their knowledge.

“The site was chosen specifically for Moreton Bay figs. The cost of the trees includes a lifetime of care by the park.”
