As Christmas draws near, Irish singer Ronan Keating is spreading some holiday cheer while down under.
Currently living in Sydney with his family, Keating has continued a cherished tradition by joining the Salvation Army for their Christmas Appeal.
On Monday night, the 47-year-old popped on his apron to serve meals, water, clothes and more to those sleeping rough at Central Station and Wentworth Park in Sydney.
“I’m here to create any sort of awareness possible, ” Keating told Confidential.
“On Christmas Eve back in Dublin we (him and his wife) would bring the older kids Jack, Missy and Ali to the soup kitchens to help out there and fundraise. It’s a Christmas tradition for us and something I’ve always tried to do, so I reached out (to Salvation Army) to say that I could do this and raise some awareness for people that are sleeping rough at this time of year.”
Opting for a Chrissy in the sun, Keating is spending the holiday season with Aussie wife Storm’s family and his children in New Zealand.
“I’m much looking forward to seeing everybody and getting everybody together for a hot Christmas,” he said.
“It’s being around family which is the most important part of Christmas … it’s all about rallying around each other and it’s magical for the kids.”
Although his children are all over the age of 19, Keating shared that Santa Claus remains the most cherished tradition in his family.
“I still remember my first BMX as a kid that Santa brought me, it was so magical for me and still is for our family,” he said.
The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $27 million this Christmas, with Keating urging Australians to help out where they can.
“It breaks my heart. I absolutely find it devastating that there’s so many people in this fabulous city of Sydney that are struggling to feed themselves, feed their families. Any help goes a long way,” he added.
