2019's must-see Aussie reality TV shows

Singer Ellen Reed has spoken of the “blackest of self-doubt” that gripped her after being convinced to compete on the latest season of The Voice only to not make it past the first Blind Audition phase.

Fans hit out at the reality singing show last night after Reed’s performance of Rihanna’s Diamonds failed to see coaches Boy George, Kelly Rowland, Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian turn their chairs.

The result came as a shock given Reed was performing as a returning ‘All Star’ after making it to the grand final of the 2016 season that saw Alfie Acuri crowned winner.

“Initially I wasn’t sure, I have come so far from the scared, insecure girl who went all the way to the Grand Final three years ago,” Reed wrote in a lengthy Instagram post after the audition aired on Monday night.

“I have grown so much as a singer, a songwriter, a performer and entertainer but also as a person. So when they approached me to go on the show as an “All Star” I said I would think about it. I was convinced by someone on staff who I have known for a long time to have another go — “we would all be incredibly surprised if you didn’t turn a chair … You just have to trust us … What’s the worst that could happen?” He convinced me it would be a good thing and I thought if I didn’t give it a go, I would always wonder what if, it still wasn’t sitting right with me but I ignored my gut instincts and said yes. Maybe this time I would get the record deal.”

Other All Stars competing this season include Jack Vidgen and Prinnie Stevens.

Fans labelled the scene “brutal” and “f***ing stupid” as they took to social media to vent their outrage.

“I have had time to process the outcome. It has been months since this audition took place,” Reed, 30, wrote. “Knowing this will go to air, I have been through all of the emotions. The blackness of self-doubt and hurt and at times I have felt the anxiety rising in me so fast that I thought I would drown in it. Anxiety has always been something I have to deal with on the regular. Sometimes it grips me when I least expect it but this time it threatened to consume me.”

Nine issued a statement saying: “We were delighted to have Ellen back on the show as an All Star and are sorry she wasn’t able to progress to the next round but that is the unpredictable nature of the Blind auditions which every artist, ALL Stars included, must face. We wish Ellen all the best in her music career”.
