HER Pitch Perfect character Fat Amy made her a household name around the globe, and Rebel Wilson has now revealed that her larger-than-life shape was a deliberate career move.
“I don’t know if it was mega-conscious, but I thought: ‘How can I get more laughs? Maybe if I was a bit fatter …’ And then suddenly I was fatter, and doing comedy,” the Western Sydney-born actor told UK’s The Daily Telegraph.
The Pitch Perfect star, who was said to be contractually forbidden from losing weight while sequels for the film were in the works, said that she was motivated to pile on the pounds by a fellow actor.
“I was like: ‘Oh. That girl’s getting a lot of laughs, a lot easier than me. What is it?’ Because I don’t think there’s much difference in talent. And I remember distinctly thinking: ‘I think it’s because she’s fatter’”.
A stark contrast to the Hollywood stereotype of unhealthily thin women, Wilson said that her size was her point of difference.
“I saw my size as being an advantage, whereas so many women see it as a disadvantage”, she admitted.
With a career rooted firmly in comedy, Wilson — who is suing Bauer Media for stories published in Women’s Day that she claims falsely accused her of lying about how old she is — said she wasn’t afraid of Tinseltown’s noted prejudice against older women.
“Hollywood IS ageist. That’s why people do crazy sh*t to their faces — out of desperation to look younger. But I think my career is based more on my personality, so it doesn’t really matter.”
