Real-life wedding for stars of hit musical The Wedding Singer

In a case of life imitating art, two stars of the hit musical The Wedding Singer are engaged in real life after falling in love on-set.

There’s going to be a real-life wedding for stars of the hit musical The Wedding Singer.

Sydney actor Haydan Hawkins, 33, says there was an instant connection when he first met his on-stage love interest, Nadia Komazec, 32, earlier this year and they are now engaged.

“We both knew from the start there was a connection and a mutual admiration for each other as actors, which always makes an on-stage love interest a bit easier,” said Hawkins.

“The romantic connection with us, really solidified during the end of rehearsals when we started to flesh out our characters in the show, using more and more of our sense of humour and personality.

“I’d pick her up before rehearsals... She would make me a coffee and I started to get more and more nervous about picking her up than doing the show with her.”

Based on the hilarious Adam Sandler film of the same name and set in the 1980s, the Tony Award-nominated show stars Hawkins as Sammy and Komazec as his on-and-off lover Holly.

Hawkins admits that at times, it was awkward to portray a love-hate relationship on stage with Komazec.

“It definitely can be awkward,” he said.

“If one of the actors is self-conscious and not in the thick of the character or they’re thinking of themselves kissing or being intimate with another actor. That doesn’t work.”

The pair began dating halfway through the show’s Adelaide season and Hawkins popped the question three months later.

They are now set to tie the knot in Komazec’s hometown next year.

“The saying is true, ‘When you know, you know’,” she said.

“We’re getting married in Adelaide in October 2022. Until then we’ll be planning, touring with the show, smooching on and off stage and unapologetically grossing out everyone around us. I cannot wait to become Mrs Hawkins.”

The David Venn Enterprises production kicks off at the State Theatre on January 5.
