Rap icon Sean Comb’s son Christian: ‘I have a real legacy I have to uphold’

Rapper and model Christian Combs is determined to do his dad proud.
While Combs refers to his father simply as ‘pops’, the rest of the world know him as Sean Combs, or by his stage names Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puffy or Diddy.
“Pops definitely said that it is something that if I am going to do, I have to take full responsibility and I am not going to have to be able to play around,” the 21-year-old told Confidential of following in his dads very famous footsteps.
“I have a real legacy I have to uphold and I am going to have to make a name for myself and let people know that I am out here working and nothing was just handed to me. Pops said, anything I put my mind to, I can do.”
Combs is in Sydney for his first visit to Australia, performing at the launch of the new K by Dolce & Gabbana fragrance at a Darling Point mansion last night.
While also a musician, he modelled in the Dolce & Gabbana menswear show in Milan last year and appeared as one of the faces of the 2018 Spring/Summer men’s collection.
“I am proud of my pops but I am going to make a name for myself,” he said, referring to the legacy of his father as “really just black excellence, from music to fashion to pushing the culture forward and inspiring people, that is something I really want to do”.
With more than two million Instagram followers, the 21-year-old released his new album, Cyncerely C3 in March, featuring collaborations with Ty Dolla $ign, City Girls and Jeremih.
“Since I was really young, I always wanted to be a rapper, that was my first love … music,” he said. “Watching my father and being able to sit there and be a fly on the wall I got to learn so much and it just really inspired me, watching him. One of the things my pops always says is to be original. I don’t want to sound like anybody else out here today. You’ve got to be unique.”
Combs, who goes by the name King Combs on social media, grew up in New York but now calls Los Angeles home. He has five siblings and while we may often see the offspring of other Hollywood superstars going off the rails, he has kept himself grounded.
“Growing up there were things as a Combs you can’t do that maybe my friends could do. When you grow up under that spotlight, you have to hold yourself with a type of respect. I had to be a little more low key. I couldn’t be like the other kids, 10-years-old online carrying on.”
