Transgender actor Daniielle Alexis may have had a “train wreck” interview with conservative media personality Candace Owens, but it’s her Australian roots and unshakeable self-worth that keep her grounded.
The Wentworth star, originally from Perth, has spent the past four years in LA, carving out a place for herself in Hollywood.
Not only is she part of Cardi B’s glam team, but she’s also built a name for herself in the industry — one that recently caught the attention of Owens.
However, life in America isn’t all glitz and glamour for Alexis.
“It’s scary,” she told Confidential.
“One thing that I’m very blessed about is the fact that all of my documentation is Australian, so I am very privileged in the sense that everything is recognised as female.
“It’s almost like I got a hall pass. It really makes you so grateful and proud to be Australian when you’re in another country and you see how they’re treating their people.”
It comes after president Donald Trump made a series of executive orders against transgender people since he returned to office, including the change to have all documentation recognise gender assigned at birth.
Fellow actor Hunter Schafer, who rose to fame through Euphoria, is one of many transgender women who have had to navigate these policy changes.
“I am not for children changing their sex or doing anything drastic and I think that’s dangerous, I definitely am all for protecting children,” Alexis said.
“There’s definitely a way that things can be done properly but unfortunately it’s not about that anymore. They use children as a pillar and then decide to annihilate the whole community.
“They are trying to erase everyone which is why it’s crazy.”
Last October, Alexis made a surprising appearance on Owens’ podcast, despite her anti-trans views.
The trans actor agreed to speak with Owens after being encouraged by singer Ray J who joined her on the podcast.
“I thought screw it,” she said.
“I’ve got nothing to lose, because Candace can say whatever she wants to me, but I’ve been targeted since I could walk for my gender identity, so there’s nothing she can say that’s gonna bring me down.”
Although the two certainly clashed during their conversation which lasted over two hours, Alexis says that deep down it was all a bit of an “act.”
“I could see in her eyes that she knew that regardless of everything, that I’m a woman,” Alexis said.
“I said to her, do you see a gay boy in front of you or do you see a woman? And she paused for ages because she wanted to obviously rip me down, but it’s kind of like she was almost not wanting to be mean in a way at the same time.
“She couldn’t answer it, all she said was ‘I just think it’s dishonesty.’
“I know what I am and what I’m not, but you can’t sit there and tell me that I’m the equivalent of Ray J sitting next to me like it’s just outrageous.”
Determined to stay in the US, Alexis is continuing to make waves in Hollywood with some “life-changing” auditions on the horizon.
