SHE is no stranger to the musical theatre stage. But Prinnie Stevens says she has landed her “dream role” playing the “conniving” sister in The Bodyguard: The Musical.
The former Australian Idol finalist and The Voice star will play Nicki Marron, the younger sister of pop diva Rachel Marron.
Fellow Australian Idol alumni Paulini will play the role of Marron, made famous by Whitney Houston.
Stevens, who recently starred in Thriller Live and Aladdin and his Wondrous Lamp, said she was drawn to the role of Nicki, a scheming, jealous and dangerous character who ultimately proves the biggest threat to her sister, because of its complexity.
A bigger focus has been put on the character for the musical, which also affords Stevens more vocal opportunities than in the film, including the chance to bust out two of its biggest ballads, Saving All My Love and Run To You.
“I’m so excited. I think for me, I have done a lot of musical theatre in the past, people know me as a singer. This is a really serious acting role for me, I’m really excited about it,” Stevens said.
“It’s a really heavy acting role for me. That’s the thing I was most excited about and I get to really dig into my acting ability and also be able to sing Whitney.”
The Bodyguard will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on April 22.
