Police Commissioner Mick Fuller helps design NRL grand final ring

The blue and white colours of the police have inspired the design of this year’s NRL premiership ring, which was partly designed by Commissioner Mick Fuller.

Top NSW cop Mick Fuller has his bling on ahead of the NRL Grand Final.

Police Commissioner Fuller was inspired by the blue and white chequered band on a police car and around the edge of an officer’s hat in helping design the 2021 NRL Premiership ring.

“The design was done in a way that the top of the ring with blue sapphires and white diamonds looks like a chequered band, which truly reflects not just the national nature of the game NRL but of course policing right across Australia,” Mr Fuller told The Daily Telegraph.

“It is always nice to be recognised for the challenging role that you have and it is nice that it is a positive thing as well. From a police perspective, we are often dealing with the worst side of life, whether that is death or public disorder, protests and Covid and all of those challenges.

For that to be recognised through the NRL Premiership ring as a part of history, that is the wonderful part about it. It is a reflection on all of the hard work that they have done, not just during Covid but the challenges of policing.”

Last year’s premiership ring honoured Australia’s frontline heroes incorporating a picture of a firefighter and a nurse from Fire NSW Chief Superintendant Ken Murphy and Emergency nurse Lyndal Keith, while retired great of the game Johnathan Thurston created the 2019 ring.

Mr Fuller worked with Sam Rahme of Sydney’s Affinity Diamonds to come up with the design with the jeweller also donating a $10,000 pair of diamond earings to raise money for the NSW Police Legacy charity.

“While that (Police Legacy) is the difficult part of policing, those who have lost their lives protecting the people of NSW, it is nice that the 2021 premiership ring is a recognition of police across Australia,” Mr Fuller said.

Leading into the NRL Grand final this weekend, the diehard St George Illawarra fan said he would be barracking for the Penrith Panthers over South Sydney Rabbitohs.

“I am a Dragons supporter so I guess from my perspective when your team is not in the Grand Final, you always want to go for a state team and of course we’ve got a couple of state teams,” he explained, adding that he will be watching the game from home on Sunday. “Souths and the Dragons have a pretty strong rivalry where probably Penrith and St George don’t so I think I might be going for the young guns at Penrith this year.”

Players and the coach from the winning team this weekend will each receive a ring valued at more than $10,000 with two carats worth of diamonds and sapphires set in solid white gold.
