It’s the latest celebrity fitness craze with its dedicated legion of fans including actor Joel Edgerton and boxing legend Mike Tyson.
Since launching earlier this year, celebrities such as former cricketer Michael Clarke and designer Pip Edwards have been flocking to studios in Bondi Beach and Surry Hills for the gruelling KAAIAA workout.
Described as a combination of “pilates, body weight exercises and meditation”, the hour-long workout incorporates music and promises to “change your life” by focusing on four pillars of health — mental, spiritual, physical and emotional.
P.E Nation boss Edwards said classes had improved her overall wellbeing. “I’ve been doing the KAAIAA method from inception and am a massive fan and advocate for the transformation that is real and life changing,” she said.
“(It’s a) workout for the mind and heart … Working out the mind, body and soul all in one, is a game changer.
“The only way forward for a better relationship with your true self is to finally get to meet yourself and challenge your true self, it’s an eye opener to real life.”
Former Neighbours star Natalie Bassingthwaighte and model Montana Cox have also experienced the fascinating world of KAAIAA.
Former DJ Leah Simmons — a certified pilates instructor, personal trainer and Kundalini yoga teacher — created the workout while living in Bali six years ago.
More than 3000 people have attended classes in recent months, despite Simmons not spending any money on marketing.
“The movement side of it is rooted in my training as a pilates teacher, so it’s all very safe,” she said.
“There’s deep core conditioning, it’s strong. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a challenging workout, they’re sweating and there’s squats … but there’s no expectation around having to be a certain level.
“When you train consistently across the four pillars — mental, spiritual, emotional and physical — you not only start to look better obviously from a physical standpoint but you start to feel better.
“When you start to feel better you start to have better conversations, you start to have better thoughts and you make better decisions in your life.”
