Co host Peter Stefanovic could be jettisoned from Channel 9’s Weekend Today after a second stint at the helm of the breakfast show.

The rumour mill has been clunking into overdrive amid growing whispers the seasoned reporter and presenter is moving back to the Nine newsroom full time.

The 37-year-old former war correspondent, who returned in January to front the weekend program for the second time with Allison Langdon, is said to be “rattled” by the news.

“Nine has dropped Peter Stefanovic from hosting Weekend Today and he’s going back to the newsroom,” an industry source told The Daily Telegraph.

“It’s upset him, he’s been left quite rattled by it.”

Stefanvoic is currently in Mexico with his Today news reader wife Sylvia Jeffreys, celebrating his brother Karl’s wedding to Jasmine Yarborough.

Both are said to be spending Christmas in Sydney when they return from the nuptials on December 16.

The clamouring rumour is just the latest shake-up for the Today series, with executive producer Mark Calvert stepping down from the role after a horror year of ratings and “tension” with its star, Karl Stefanovic.

In an email to staff, Channel 9 news director Darren Wick confirmed Calvert would leave the embattled breakfast program after five years at the top.

“From personal experience, I know there is no more challenging role in news and current affairs than the daily breakfast battle between Today and Sunrise.

“It’s a national ratings race where audience loyalty fluctuates from city to city, and often suburb to suburb,” Mr Wick wrote.

Karl’s messy marriage breakup and swift rebound with model Yarbrough — almost a decade his junior — and embarrassing public trashing of his co-host Georgie Gardner have seen an ongoing slump in the show’s female viewership.

Last year also saw the sensational exit of Lisa Wilkinson when she defected to Channel 10.

Nine has issued a firm denial of Peter’s exit from the weekend show.

“It’s scuttlebutt, he’s not going anywhere.

“He’s currently on annual leave, that’s why he’s not presenting.”
