Acerbic celebrity columnist Perez Hilton has taken aim at loud mouth professional gossiper Richard Reid, labelling the expat American a “D-List version of me”.
Hilton was approached by producers to compete on Channel 10 reality show I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! but was surprised to see Reid not only on the show but win the series earlier this year.
“I was on Skype with the executive producer and they ended up instead casting a D-List version of me,” Hilton told Confidential, referring to Reid, who is regarded in the industry as a brazen self promoter.
“Not dis to him but I am an international icon and that Richard whatever his name is, is not.”
Speaking on the phone from Los Angeles, Hilton continued: “I would do it. I am hoping that I can’t do it though, that I am too busy and they missed their opportunity. I would have been dynamite on that show, I guarantee it would have been explosive ratings.”
Hilton claimed he was also approached years ago when Australian TV executives were looking at bringing back Celebrity Big Brother.
While he built a global empire as a gossip columnist — feuding with some of the biggest names in Hollywood — with his site perezhilton.com, the 41-year-old has branched out and appeared in films and on TV.
His most recent TV work had its debut in the US this week with the reboot of MTV’s The Hills: New Beginnings that will air on Foxtel locally.
The father-of-three is also gunning for a job on Aussie television and is working on “a juicy tell-all memoir”.
“I am shameless and I also believe in putting out in to the universe that which you want,” he said.
“I would love to come and work in Australia in some capacity. I have the most insane work ethic. I am the content king.
“I work harder than anybody I know. I am still 14 years later working 15 hour days some days. It is exhausting but I still love it even though I am working non-stop.”
In his private life, Hilton remains single and has taken himself off the dating apps.
“I was hoping and praying it could happen the old fashioned way,” he said, having tried online dating in December.
“I would say most gays don’t like me. I have accepted it. My baggage is very public and I don’t let it weigh me down too much. I have learnt to deal with it and keep moving forward.
“A lot of them look down on what I do for a living. If I was super hot, that would change everything and also too if I was on television.
“If I was on a hit TV show, gays would love me and the perception would be very different.”
