It was a feast of florals at iconic Sydney restaurant Cafe Sydney as Everest week kicked off with the TAB Everest Women’s Breakfast.
The morning event officially marks the start of the race week, which has become arguably one of the biggest events on Sydney’s social calendar. Despite the early morning start, Sydney’s elite racing identities as well and media personalities were in attendance.
Presenter Sam Armytage marked her first appearance since officially leaving Channel Seven at the event.
Trainer Annabel Neasham, whose mare Sunshine in Paris will be apart of this Saturday’s Everest, told the crowd she was hoping to make history and become the first female trainer to win the richest race on Turf.
“A lot comes down to the barrier draw. but to be the first all female team to win would be fantastic.”
Neasham also explained that at a recent event in Victoria, all eyes were on the upcoming Everest rather than the Melbourne Cup.
“No one in Melbourne is talking about the Melbourne Cup at the moment … [The Everest] is the most talked about race in Australia.”
Just last week the race was given it’s prestigious Group One status. Jockey Rachel King said while she’s had plenty of experience in big races, the Everest is still unique.
“Normally it’s pretty quiet behind the gates but [The Everest] is totally different.”
“It’s pretty loud,” said King, who is riding Gai Waterhouse’s Lady of Camelot in the race.
Channel Seven presenter and horse racing analyst Emma Freedman said since its inception in 2017, The Everest has grown to become a mammoth event.
“It’s my favourite race day,” she said.
“I’ve never experienced anything like it … it’s an extraordinary vibe.”
Other attendees included model Laura Dundovic, singer Jacinta Gulisano and Vogue editor Jess Montague.
Guests were treated to a breakfast which included blinis with warm salmon, cucumber, creme fraiche and salmon roe, corn and soft leek fritter with parmesan, corn salsa and avocado, bacon and egg pie and soy linseed sourdough with avocado and cupcakes with passion fruit yoghurt.
