CHANNEL Nine has copped a flood of celebrity backlash on social media following the sensational news of Lisa Wilkinson leaving Today over a pay dispute.
The well-respected veteran journalist, 57, quit after the network refused to pay her as much as her co-host Karl Stefanovic.
This morning, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has come out in strong support of TV host Wilkinson’s equal pay battle, declaring it would be “akin to me getting a pay cut” because she’s a female premier.
Asked about the breakfast personality stepping down from her job, Berejiklian said: “If the reason is about equal pay I say good on her.”
“If that is the reason, and that’s what we’ve read, I think she’s sending a very strong message to the community.
“That would be akin to me getting a pay cut because my predecessors weren’t female so I completely appreciate her position if that’s the reason and I congratulate her taking that step.”
Roads Minister Melinda Pavey also agreed.

“I say good on her. I think it’s a significant moment and it’s a very strong step and good on her.”
Wilkinson defected last night to Network Ten’s The Project as fellow reporters have applauded her bold move.
Her new colleagues Carrie Bickmore and Peter Helliar were the first to welcome the TV breakfast star’s new role but others appeared unimpressed by Nine’s failed negotiations.
ABC’s Juanita Phillips wrote on Twitter, “So how does Today handle Lisa’s sudden exit tomorrow morning? Tributes, or moving right along now” after he first tweet which simply said “Oh no! What is 9 thinking?”
