An uncharacteristically chilling turn by Nicole Kidman headlines the latest sneak peek of the Aussie-produced Nine Perfect Strangers as more teasers of the much-anticipated TV series were released on Saturday.
With her hair dyed near-silver and matching long robes for her role as a wellness retreat operator, Kidman is terrifyingly eerie in the short teaser released by Amazon Prime Video, which also sees US comedy star Melissa McCarthy playing against type as a stressed-out career woman in search of some inner peace.
Bobby Cannavale appears in the latest trailer as another guest as does Aussie up-and-comer Samara Weaving who makes a brief appearance as a social-media obsessed wife facing marriage woes.
They join six other lead stars, including Luke Evans and Michael Shannon, who appear to embark on a series of mysterious healing rituals at the luxurious retreat commandeered by Kidman who plays spooky wellness guru Masha Dmitrichenko.
Shot almost entirely in Byron Bay over several months during the Covid lockdowns last year, the eight-part series appears to remain faithful to the riveting New York Times bestseller on which its based — written by Aussie author Liane Moriarty.
And in another encouraging sign for fans of addictive whodunits, the series is produced by the team behind Moriarty’s Big Little Lies and last year’s smash thriller The Undoing, in which Kidman starred with Hugh Grant. Both shows are currently streaming on Binge.
Fans were quick to chime in on their early reviews of the new Nine Perfect Strangers teaser.
“Hell yeah, horror,” one wrote on YouTube.
Another added; “I’m a huge fan of Nicole Kidman so I cannot wait to see this. And what an amazing cast.”
