It was a bittersweet moment for Nicole Kidman as she premiered her latest screen effort in Sydney in Wednesday night.
The Australian superstar chose an iconic venue, Palace Verona in Paddington, to showcase TV series Expats, making it the last red carpet event for the cinema that she opened 27 years ago with her film To Die For.
“I was here for To Die For, we did the premiere here and now we are doing this here as the final premiere,” Kidman said.
“Which is sort of sad but also what an extraordinary trajectory getting to now.”
Kidman attended the event with chart-topping singer husband Keith Urban, as well as her sister Antonia and mother Janelle.
Based primarily in the US, the couple make the trip home to Sydney to spend time with family each Christmas.
Kidman co-produced Expats through her production company Blossom Films with fellow Australian Alice Bell, with Lulu Wang directing the six-part limited series.
“It is finding material that I feel hasn’t been made,” Kidman said of producing.
“We are not a big company, Blossom, so we try to do things in a very careful way and in a very hands on particular way.”
It will be released on January 26 through Prime Video, and is based on the best-selling book titled Expatriates from Janice YK Lee.
Expats tells the story of a group of expatriates living in Hong Kong whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy.
It also stars Sarayu Blue, Ji-Young Yoo, Brian Tee and Jack Huston.
Guests at the premiere included actors Damon Herriman and Sacha Horler with just one movie length episode shown rather than the whole series.
“You can’t sit through six hours tonight,” Kidman said.
“So this is the stand-alone episode five. I hope you enjoy it.”
Nicole jets into Sydney for Christmas with the fam
Two days earlier, loved up stars Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban arrived home for Christmas.
After Urban touched down with the couple’s daughters – Sunday and Faith – early Monday, the country superstar singer looked ever bit the doting husband as he greeted Kidman at Sydney International Airport on Tuesday morning.
With Christmas just a few days away, it is an annual pilgrimage the family makes to spend time with loved ones in Sydney.
The couple have been married since 2006, having met a year earlier at a G’Day USA Gala event in LA.
In an interview with Stellar earlier this year, Kidman spoke of the secret to their successful marriage.
“Favourite person. And prioritising us, going ‘What’s going to benefit us? Will this decision that I make contribute to us?’ That’s just the way we operate. I was talking to friends last night, asking ‘How do you sleep in your bed?’ Someone has to write a book about it, because I’m telling you, everybody is different. That’s probably the same for relationships,” she explained.
Kidman hasn’t finished her work year yet though.
The Hollywood actor will on Wednesday walk the red carpet for the Australian premiere screening of her new Prime Video series, Expats.
It will be a historic moment for Kidman, who famously attended the opening of the cinema 27 years ago with her 1996 film, To Die For. Expats will mark the closing of the theatre as it moves to Moore Park Entertainment Quarter next year.
As such, it is the venue’s last hurrah with Kidman book-ending both the opening and closing events.
Kidman co-produced Expats, which will be released on January 26 on Prime Video, and will tell the story of a group of expatriates living in Hong Kong.
She shot the project through the pandemic. Expats also stars Sarayu Blue, Ji-Young Yoo, Brian Tee and Jack Huston. It will tell the story of three American women whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy.
The six-part limited series was directed by Lulu Wang, best known for her critically acclaimed film The Farewell, and is based on a best-selling book titled Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee.
The premiere will be the last big event on the Sydney social calendar before Christmas.
Kidman is making a habit of bringing her projects home for the festive season.
In 2021, she walked the red carpet at her family local cinema, the Cremorne Orpheum, for her Prime Video series, Being the Riccardos, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award.
Elsewhere this week, actor Sydney Sweeney was snapped at Sydney airport flying in to walk the red carpet for the Australian premiere of her rom-com, Anyone but You.
That film was shot in the Harbour City earlier this year and also stars Charlee Fraser and Glen Powell.
