Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has been so taken by her namesake city while filming a new movie here that she has revealed she is window shopping to buy a home here.
The 26-year-old flew in early on Monday for a whirlwind visit to walk the red carpet at Sydney’s Hoyt’s Entertainment Quarter at the Australian premiere of Anyone but You, which is due to hit screens on Boxing Day.
It was a significant moment, and location, for Sweeney as the Euphoria star shot the romantic comedy alongside Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell here earlier this year.
“I’m excited because we get to show off beautiful Sydney … (places like the) Opera House and Harbour Bridge, we to get to show the beautiful amazing places you guys have and I can’t wait to show everyone else what is here,” she said.
And there is a big chance Sweeney, who was wearing a Givenchy frock, will be back for good saying she would “love” to move here.
“I have a few real estate apps, I’m looking at Palm Beach, I would love to,” she said.
Anyone but You was directed by Will Gluck, of Easy A and Friends With Benefits fame, and also stars Rachel Griffiths, Dermot Mulroney, Bryan Brown and Charlee Fraser.
Gluck, who also filmed Peter Rabbit in Sydney, said the reason he keeps coming back to film is “cause it’s beautiful, there are people that are always nice and no one really ever shows it.”
While Sweeney flew in especially, Powell wasn’t able to make it for the premiere.
The premise of the film is simple – two people, Bea (Sweeney) and Powell (Ben), despise each other but can’t get away from each other while on holiday in Sydney.
“We want to get people back to see rom coms at the cinema,” said Gluck. “Everyone sees them at home but there is something about seeing them in a theatre with people laughing and gasping, that’s what we are missing. It’s nothing to do with the quality it’s watching it with other people.” Sweeney added: “I hope (people) walk away wanting to fall in love”.
AUSSIE’S MAJOR HOLLYWOOD GIG
You could say acting came to Charlee Fraser, not the other way round.
One of our most successful models on the international runway, Charlee has joined Sydney Sweeney on the red carpet for her first Hollywood film, Anyone but You.
And it’s not one of those gigs where she’s an extra in the background: Fraser has a supporting lead role to big name stars Sweeney and Powell.
“It was a surprise to me,” Fraser told Confidential. “It wasn’t something that was a long time in preparation, it developed relatively quickly and it was an opportunity I took in the moment.”
It is not uncommon for well-known models to cross over to the big and small screen. Abbey Lee Kershaw has done it, as has Gemma Ward, Maddison Brown and Jessica Gomes.
The move though wasn’t in Fraser’s sights. She had done no acting classes when her management was approached by the casting director for Anyone but You.
“From that I guess I had a look or had interested in them in some way,” Fraser explained.
“So I worked with an acting coach, I sent in an audition and they liked it and I went back a couple of times before eventually I got it and here we are.”
Anyone but You was shot in Sydney earlier this year. Fraser plays an Australian woman named Margaret, who is the ex girlfriend of Powell’s character, Ben.
The film also stars Rachel Griffiths, Bryan Brown and Dermot Mulroney.
Ahead of her red carpet turn, Fraser said she “can’t wait for people to see” the production.
“I am really excited to get feedback from people,” she added.
Fraser has also shot a part in George Miller’s upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga alongside Chris Hemsworth, Anya Taylor-Joy and Tom Burke.
“I do have the acting bug,” she declared. “It is really cool. I have an acting agent now and I am looking forward to hopefully more auditions.”
Of Powell and Sweeney, Fraser said: “They are so fun because it was a rom-com, but also they are super professional. They are incredibly good at their job. They are such good actors. It was really fun to watch them, to observe and see.”
