TV SOAP Neighbours will make history when it airs its first same-sex marriage proposal next week.
Responding to the legalisation of gay marriage, the Channel Ten drama’s first episode for this year, on Monday night, will feature David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) proposing to Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson).
“The writing department actually fluked this,” Wilson told Confidential.
“We filmed this about three months ago and the writers came up with the idea about six months ago so the timing has worked out perfectly.”
Like rival Seven soap Home And Away, Neighbours has long been known for pushing boundaries with its storylines.
“I think it is very special,” Wilson said.
“A lot of the times we try to attack issues on the show and sometimes they have been and gone in the media or they don’t get as much light as they can but this should absolutely bring the issue to the surface.”
In true soap style, the proposal comes with plenty of drama and costume, with David dressed as Cupid.
“The timing for a proposal isn’t ideal as Aaron’s brother has just confessed to manslaughter and baby Gabe is missing plus Aaron’s ex, Rory, is back in Erinsborough,” the episode synopsis reads.
“Aaron and Rory spent time together in Paris recently, which David has no idea about. Viewers will have to stay tuned to see if David’s romantic plans are successful or turn pear-shaped.”
Wilson joined the cast of Neighbours in 2015. He was previously better known as a model, having been named Australia’s Hottest Tradie when he worked as a carpenter.
“I never realised how much of an impact the character of Aaron would have on people,” he said.
“I’ve had people come out to their friends because of Aaron and the storylines the guys have written and then send me messages thanking me.”
