Walking a fashion runway has long been a dream for Sharon Johal, but the Australian actor never thought it would actually happen.
Preparing to strut her stuff on the catwalk for the first time at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney this week, the former Neighbours star admitted being “super nervous”.
“Growing up, I never saw myself represented in this industry, size-wise, heritage-wise, look-wise, so I never really thought it would ever be a possibility in my lifetime, similar to my acting journey,” she said.
“I let the dream go many years ago and somehow this opportunity manifested itself.
“It has taught me a huge life lesson to never give up and bury your dreams, because anything is possible.”
While most models start their runway careers in their teens, Johal, 37, said the timing of her debut made it even more meaningful.
“It’s still scary,” Johal said, citing outdated beauty standards and her position as a respected figure in the Indian community.
“But I think doing this runway now, at this stage of my life, is actually more iconic than if I had done it as a teenager, because it means more.
Also taking a front row seat at this year’s shows will be influencer Costeen Hatzi, who has shared a parting message for her ex, tennis ace Nick Kyrgios, as she moves on with her life.
Focusing on her content creator and influencer work after travelling the world supporting Kyrgios’ career, Hatzi says she has a renewed purpose.
“I’m loving my work and doing content every day,” Hatzi said.
“We haven’t spoken. Relationships come to an end and I believe it’s for the best, unfortunately. And I hope he finds peace and happiness within himself.
“I definitely entered the relationship with pure intentions. I loved him and thought we had a great connection. Now that I’m not travelling, I can do what I want and be fully present.”
Hatzi will be one of the glamorous faces sitting front row at Australian Fashion Week, which starts on Monday with the Carla Zampatti showcase in Sydney.
