AUSTRALIAN born, New York based model Montana Cox has kicked off Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The 23-year-old was sitting front row alongside the Stenmark twins and Annabella Barber for Dion Lee’s sleek show on the steps of the Sydney Opera House.
After showcasing for six years running at New York Fashion Week, the celebrated designer returned to Australia’s biggest industry-based fashion week with a showcase of his signature dresses and sculptural tailoring.
Following the show the designer then hosted an official fashion week welcome dinner alongside Cox for some of Sydney’s most influential fashionistas. Those in attendance included Elyse Taylor and Pip Edwards.
Cox told Confidential she was happy to be “watching the show from the sideline,” rather than walking saying, “you get to appreciate the clothes from a different perspective.”
She also said it was nice to come home and represent a brand “other than David Jones.”
After a three-year-partnership the retail giant let go of the model, and her six figure salary, because of cost cutting. Cox says the decision was a blessing for her career, because it allowed her to focus on working overseas.
“Sometimes one door closes and it opens up a lot of other doors, which in this case it has,” she said. “I’ve have the busiest couple of months of my life.”
She also says there is no bad blood between her and the store. “I went to their show in February and we have a really good relationship. It’s really nice to work with a client and remain amicable.”
Following in the footsteps of Lee, Australian designers Alice McCall and Bianca Spender will show off their new collections today.
