Body positivity: how imperfection became beautiful

An Australian model has called for an end to “plus-size” labelling in modelling.

Byron Bay’s Jessica Vander Leahy — who is often referred to as “plus-size’ or as a “curve model” — believes classifying models based on their weight is no longer acceptable.

“I think that these days modelling is really about embracing people who are just interesting,” she told Confidential.

“It’s not really about your looks anymore. It’s really about what you stand for in many ways and I think that’s really exciting.

“So whilst once upon a time you were really defined by your size and that’s where the term ‘plus-size’ or ‘curve model’ came about, I think these days you can pretty much just say you’re a model without having to explain your presence in the world. You don’t have to say, ‘I’m a petite model or curve model’ … It’s really all just about you’re a model and with the advent of social media that’s what people have been pushing for and thankfully brands have listened.”

In Australia, plus-size is generally considered as anything above size 14.

The Australian-Papua New Guinean model, 33, has been featured in various fashion campaigns over the years modelling everything from swimwear and activewear to evening wear for big name brands.

Leahy, who wears a dress size 16, said gradual changes to the modelling industry and growing inclusion are long overdue.

“There’s definitely a shift that I’ve been noticing from the time that I started modelling until now, there’s a lot more inclusion,” she said.

“That’s really exciting because it makes people from all different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders (however you want to identify) feel included in that fashion conversation instead of left out and that it’s just for the cool kids.”

Leahy is celebrating Australian brand Mimco’s 25th anniversary and special capsule collection.
