FORMER My Kitchen Rules finalist David Vu fronted court today on drug charges following a night out in Sydney’s east, in the heart of the harbour city’s cocaine capital.
Vu, 32, appeared for the first time before Sydney Downing Centre Local Court today pleading guilty to being in possession of .046 grams of cocaine after he bought the drug at a popular Double Bay nightclub.
Earlier this week new statistics emerged revealing Sydney’s east was rife with use of the illicit drug and police have even launched a new drug driving campaigning targeting the region because of its high use of the drug.
Police arrested the celebrity cook in the Hunter Arcade Double Bay about 1am on August 5.
According to police facts when officers searched Vu they found a small plastic resealable bag containing white powder in his pants pocket.
When interviewed the former MKR contestant admitted the drug was cocaine and that he had bought it at the Double Bay nightclub Casablanca.
Vu, from Punchbowl, rose to fame after appearing on the hit Channel 7 reality cooking show with friend Betty Banks this season
The pair narrowly missed out on the grand final as they wowed the judges with their Asian inspired dishes which Vu said were inspired by his parents who came to Australia as refugees from Vietnam with judges Manu Feildel and Pete Evans describing the pair’s take on Asian cuisine as the “Betty and David twist”.
Vu will return to court later this month when he is expected to be sentenced.
Vu appeared in court on the same day as George Calombaris, a judge on MKR’s main cooking show rival MasterChef.
Calombaris’ case was today adjourned for pre-sentence in six weeks for assaulting a football fan at the A-League grand final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory in Sydney.
The 38-year-old celebrity chef was supporting Melbourne Victory, which lost the game, at Allianz Staduim in May when he began arguing with a fan.
It has been revealed in court that the accused pointed at the young man and said, “You are big mouth-man, you dodgy c*nt,” the accused then approached the young man and punched him in the lower abdomen with his right fist, in public.
Calombaris told police he believed the man had called his mother a c*nt. He has previously entered a plea of guilty.
